I am Cal1 Bryant. I’ve spent over a decade building software2 for regulated healthcare. Currently, I’m the Principal Cloud Architect at Hypervision Surgical, designing and building its AWS platform, surgical device PKI and security monitoring.
Before that I spent 12 years at Cydar building CE/FDA-regulated software: a distributed GPU image registration pipeline, a hospital PACS gateway, an edge auto-update system and SAML2 single sign-on. Later I led the engineering team there, while staying hands-on.
How I work
- My goal is to make myself operationally redundant: automate what can be automated, and define infrastructure as code so it can be reviewed, reproduced and audited.
- I prefer “boring”, well-understood technology, and the simplest design that solves the problem in front of me.
- I enjoy mentoring and work closely with my team, trying to avoid micro-managing or gate-keeping.
- I believe problems should be surfaced early, even when that’s uncomfortable; it’s important to have a blameless culture to encourage this.
- I find great value in tools; I spend a lot of time building and improving them – not necessarily for time saving but for flow state
